TEL to Sell Disk-based Recovery Appliance from Data Domain

TOKYO Tokyo Electron Limited (TEL) announced Wednesday that it concluded a distribution agreement with Data Domain, Inc. (Head Office: Palo Alto, California, U.S.A.; President & CEO: Frank Slootman), under which TEL begins sales of Data Domain's DD200 Restorer disk-based recovery storage unit in Japan on October 13.

High-speed, low-cost, reliable methods of protecting important data assets have become a critical issue for corporate IT departments in recent years. While disk devices can be used instead of tape devices to improve backup speed, tape devices offer better cost per volume. To manage several generations of backup data, systems combining disk and tape devices can be constructed, but this cannot improve recovery performance since data recovery, which is one objective of the systems, is tape-based.

Data Domain's DD200 Restorer uses the industry's first unique compression function (Global Compression*) to attain high backup data compression to 1/20 the original volume on average. This high rate of compression enables long-term storage of several generations of backup data, and has resulted in a disk device with a cost per volume low enough to rival tape devices. The high-speed backup and restore operations make full use of the benefits of disk-based systems to significantly reduce data recovery time. There is also a revolutionary backup data verification function that works during operation to guarantee secure and reliable recovery.

The optional remote replication software (Replicator) enables data replication from one DD200 Restorer unit to another. Since the transferred data is highly compressed, the data flow volume is dramatically reduced, saving bandwidth. Remote office data backups or disaster recovery measures can be implemented extremely efficiently for low line cost. Up to 99% of the network bandwidth used by general disk-based backup/recovery solutions can be saved.

"The market for Data Domain storage recovery products in Japan is very large and requires a sophisticated reseller channel to meet growing customer demand," said Frank Slootman, President and CEO of Data Domain. "TEL is a key part of our Sales and Marketing strategy for our international expansion into the Japanese market space. They're an extremely experienced, technically knowledgeable ally and we're excited about partnering with our first reseller in Japan."

* Global Compression: A function that performs compression by removing overlapping data and patterns from backed-up images, and extracting and saving only new data and changes.
