TEL Begins Sales of SelfReliant in Japan, Commercial Middleware from GoAhead

TOKYO - Tokyo Electron Limited (TEL) announced Tuesday that it has begun sales of SelfReliant, high availability (HA) software from GoAhead Software Inc. (Head Office: Bellevue, Washington, U.S.A.; CEO: Jim Ewel), a leading company in the development of HA, system management and messaging middleware for embedded devices. This commercial HA middleware offers software developers system resource management, fast fault detection, and failover features, all of which are essential to mission critical systems.

Traditionally, systems requiring very high availability have been built in two ways: a) by installing commercial clustering software, or b) by developing the software in-house through incorporating application-specific properties. The former approach brings with it extensive functionality on the one hand, but requires extensive amounts of time for failovers when faults occur and also is difficult to customize. The latter approach, by contrast, involves the risk of cost overuns, a longer period of time for development, and the possible failure of the development itself. SelfReliant enables customers to take advantage of the strengths of both approaches, thanks to the ease of configuration associated with commercial clustering software and the ability to incorporate in-house development expertise depending on the need.

Since SelfReliant was developed for embedded systems, it reduces the burden on CPU and memory, significantly reduces time for failovers, and can be fine-tuned to fit any kind of system environment. In addition, as middleware, it supports various types of platforms and standard technology, including Windows® and Linux, reducing personnel costs and installation time when compared to in-house development.

In the United States, Motorola Inc., one of GoAhead's largest customers, has already successfully used SelfReliant as the core of a common platform replacing separate platforms for each of its product lines. Currently, Motorola is using SelfReliant in five projects, including CDMA.

"TEL is an extremely experienced, technically knowledgeable ally in our effort to penetrate the Japan market," said Callum MacDonald, vice president of sales for GoAhead Software. "Their expertise combined with impressive industry contacts assure the delivery and support of a high availability solution for those Japanese companies requiring continuous uptime."

Potential customers of the product are communications equipment development market, financial systems development market, industrial control system market, etc.

Windows is either registered trademark or trademark of Microsoft Corporation in the United States and/or other countries.
